What is Bomb Island?
Bomb Island, also known as Doolittle Island, sits isolated in the center of Lake Murray. During World War II, it was used as a bombing target while nearby Columbia, South Carolina served as one of the nation’s largest B-25 bomber training hubs. Years of repeated bombing stripped the island of vegetation, leaving behind a remote, predator-limited landscape.
Decades later, that same isolation unintentionally created the perfect refuge for purple martins.
What was once shaped by destruction became a sanctuary.
Why Purple Martins gather here
Purple martins rely on safety in numbers. Bomb Island’s isolation limits predators and provides access to massive insect populations over open water — essential fuel before migration.
According to the Purple Martin Conservation Association, large pre-migratory roosts like Bomb Island are critical for survival and long-distance migration success.
