Joshua Kelly’s story of Pegleg Outdoors isn’t just about fly fishing—it’s about what happens when you decide to keep moving forward after everything changes. A Marine combat veteran turned fly fishing guide, Josh rebuilt his life through the outdoors, resilience, and a mindset rooted in discipline, purpose, and choice.
This MadLad TV feature documents Josh’s personal journey from combat injury to life on the water, showing how fly fishing became more than a skill. It became a way to reconnect with joy, movement, and meaning—one decision at a time.
Who Is Josh Kelly of Pegleg Outdoors?

Josh Kelly is the founder of Pegleg Outdoors, a fly fishing guide service built on accessibility, patience, and real-world experience. He is also a Marine Corps combat veteran whose life changed during military service.
In October 2009, while moving through Buji Bast Pass, Josh’s unit encountered an enemy-planted bomb. The blast severely damaged his left ankle. At first, he didn’t feel the full extent of the injury—but as time passed, the pain caught up to him. Eventually, Josh received a prosthetic leg, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Rather than allowing that moment to define him negatively, Josh made a conscious decision: stop feeling sorry for himself and start moving instead.
How Fly Fishing Became a Turning Point

In 2010, Josh was introduced to fly fishing through Warriors & Quiet Waters, a veterans organization that uses fly fishing as a pathway for healing, reflection, and reconnection with the outdoors.
What began as learning something new quickly became a passion. Fly fishing offered Josh structure, calm, and presence—qualities that carried far beyond the river. Time on the water helped him refocus on what he could do, rather than what he had lost.
After moving to Colorado, that passion deepened even further. In his early years there, Josh spent nearly 200 days a year fishing, fully immersed in rivers, streams, and the rhythm of outdoor life. Fly fishing wasn’t just an activity—it became a way to exist in the world with clarity and intention.
The Marine Mindset: Adapt, Overcome, Keep Moving

Josh credits much of his resilience to the Marine Corps mentality. Being a warrior is not something he regrets—it’s part of who he is. That mindset shaped how he approached recovery, learning, and life after injury.
In the MadLad TV episode, viewers see Josh fishing confidently on one leg—so naturally that he sometimes forgets he’s even an amputee. His focus isn’t on limitation; it’s on movement, awareness, and choice. For Josh, happiness isn’t optional. He believes that if you’re not finding joy in life, it’s worth changing direction—because staying stuck helps no one.
This mindset carries into everything he does, from guiding clients to encouraging others to get outside and try again.
Why This Story Matters
This story isn’t only for anglers or veterans. It’s for anyone navigating change, recovery, or uncertainty. Josh Kelly’s journey shows that resilience isn’t about ignoring pain—it’s about choosing forward motion, curiosity, and purpose even when life doesn’t go as planned.
Whether you’re new to fly fishing, seeking inspiration, or looking for proof that fulfillment is still possible after hardship, this story offers something real: a reminder that resilience is built through action, not waiting.
